"In Context: US military budget vs. other US priorities
The peace lobby, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, calculates for Fiscal Year 2006 that most of the US tax payer’s money goes towards war:
In tabulating their findings, it can be seen how military spending by the US compares to other areas:

Read more bout it at the site mentioned. This is all very nice, considering the whopping poverty rates in the country, currently over 12.7% of the population (37 million people) – and growing –, and at 17.8% for those under 18 (here).
[Additionally, if you are very bored and into numbers, you can see some official data here (pp. 31-32). About 45% of the money spent comes from income tax, corporate taxes only account for less than 10%. So, the price of getting the kicks from having a joyous little article every day, over half way through the paper, called “XX killed in Irak today, again, big deal”, is rather high for the tax-payer. Bloody yaks!, who understands them? They should take up a different sort of hobbie, try good old (non-American) football for a while, and lets see how that goes. It’s still violent, manly and exciting, yet somewhat cheaper, and it works for the rest of the world.]
